MOUNT VERNON — A plant closure in Mount Vernon will leave 81 people without jobs.

Westech Building Products USA at 7451 Indiana 62 East has been in the process of shutting down since Aug. 23, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

All employee separations will be complete by Nov. 21. The employees are nonunion.

According to the company's website, Westech has production facilities in the U.S., Canada and China.

The company began creating custom shapes for the window and door industry in 1979 as Engineered Profiles Ltd.

Another important year in Westech history was 1994, when a vinyl fence program was developed and promoted under the Westech Building Products name. Westech has since developed many product lines in the fence, deck and railing industry, according to the company's website.

Plant manager Jason Brown, reading from a company statement, said the closure is because of "increased competition as well as dramatic changes in technology," which have made it more difficult for the local plant's fence and decking businesses to remain competitive.

Employees who are losing their jobs are being offered severance and other forms of assistance, Brown said.
